ReefKG Overview and Training Principles

ReefKG is a reef aquarium management platform designed to help reef keepers achieve greater stability and control in their systems. By focusing on synchronizing the biological and chemical processes in a reef tank, ReefKG helps reduce fluctuations in parameters, such as alkalinity and pH, which can cause instability and stress to corals. The platform uses data from chemical trends and dosing behavior to guide reef keepers in maintaining a more stable and predictable reef environment.

At the core of ReefKG’s approach is the idea of flatline stability—minimizing fluctuations to maintain consistent parameters. By keeping alkalinity levels as stable as possible, ReefKG reveals the true metabolic demand of the reef, helping users track real-time consumption. This helps reef keepers make more informed decisions, ensuring that their systems are better managed, leading to optimal coral growth and a more stable ecosystem.

ReefKG Minimum Requirements for Stable Reef Systems

ReefKG is designed for reef systems that prioritize stability, precision, and controlled dosing. The platform focuses on maintaining stable parameters and minimizing chemical fluctuations, which is why automated dosing plays a central role. ReefKG requires reliable alkalinity testing—either manual or automated—as it is critical for tracking coral demand and evaluating changes in system chemistry. While automated testing systems provide more frequent data points, manual testing can still be used as long as results are entered consistently.

An automated dosing pump is essential to fully utilize ReefKG’s flatline stability method. This method distributes alkalinity dosing across multiple smaller intervals throughout the day, helping maintain tight chemical control and reduce fluctuations. Future updates will introduce manual dosing support for reef keepers who prefer manual dosing, with coaching tools that guide them on when and how much to dose based on system trends. These modules will help a broader range of reef systems maintain stability and synchronized chemistry, while still focusing on the core principles of ReefKG.

The Future of ReefKG: Autonomy and Precision

ReefKG is evolving towards becoming a fully autonomous system, designed to run with precision and minimal human intervention. While the platform is equipped with advanced features, these are being held back for now—not due to readiness, but because human error is more likely in manual control. Once ReefKG can safely manage these processes autonomously, these powerful updates will be rolled out, providing even greater control and stability for reef systems.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Your involvement accelerates ReefKG’s evolution, pushing the entire reef hobby forward. This is the future of reefing, and you are here at the very beginning. Together, let’s grow something extraordinary.

ReefKG™ LPS & Soft Coral LightingGuide:
Best Practices for Stable Growth

Lighting is a crucial aspect of reef keeping, especially for LPS and soft corals, and the ReefKG™ LPS & Soft Coral Lighting Profile provides a stable and forgiving starting point. Designed to mimic natural mid-reef lighting conditions, the profile supports moderate PAR ranges that encourage healthy growth, strong coloration, and natural expansion. The target PAR zones are: 80–100 PAR for the sand bed, 120–140 PAR for the middle rockwork, and moderate light for the upper rockwork, where moderate-light SPS can thrive. The spectrum design focuses on balancing violet, blue, white, and controlled red light to support photosynthesis while maintaining vibrant coral pigments without overloading the system with blue light.

The profile is compatible with mixed reef systems dominated by LPS and soft corals, while moderate-light SPS like Stylophora and Pocillopora can grow well in the upper tank sections. Training reef keepers will focus on understanding how lighting equipment and tank placement can create shaded areas, affecting light distribution. The profile was developed using Radion XR15 Blue fixtures, but it’s important to note that PAR levels and spectrum balance may vary depending on the lighting system used. ReefKG plans to expand its lighting profiles in the future to support other reef types, such as SPS-dominant systems, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of lighting technologies.
