Lighting is a crucial aspect of reef keeping, especially for LPS and soft corals, and the ReefKG™ LPS & Soft Coral Lighting Profile provides a stable and forgiving starting point. Designed to mimic natural mid-reef lighting conditions, the profile supports moderate PAR ranges that encourage healthy growth, strong coloration, and natural expansion. The target PAR zones are: 80–100 PAR for the sand bed, 120–140 PAR for the middle rockwork, and moderate light for the upper rockwork, where moderate-light SPS can thrive. The spectrum design focuses on balancing violet, blue, white, and controlled red light to support photosynthesis while maintaining vibrant coral pigments without overloading the system with blue light.
The profile is compatible with mixed reef systems dominated by LPS and soft corals, while moderate-light SPS like Stylophora and Pocillopora can grow well in the upper tank sections. Training reef keepers will focus on understanding how lighting equipment and tank placement can create shaded areas, affecting light distribution. The profile was developed using Radion XR15 Blue fixtures, but it’s important to note that PAR levels and spectrum balance may vary depending on the lighting system used.
